In the late sixties Larry’s kicktail boards sold in the thousands, mostly in So. Cal. at a time when skateboarding was dead around most of the world! Larry was awarded the US patent for the kicktail and double kicktail in 1971.

Larry and Bruce Logan then put together the Makaha/Logan Earthski line of boards. The Makaha/Logan Earthski team featured Bruce Logan, Brad Logan, Robin Logan, Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Torger Johnson, Bob Biniak and Wentzl Ruml among others!

Today, Larry is still active in Makaha, making boards from classic reproductions of vintage original designs, and modern high performance boards... all with Larry's original Surf-Skate vibe.

Makaha was founded by Venice Beach lifeguard Larry Stevenson in 1963. Larry took the look and style of surfing to make the first modern day skateboard with all pro components. He called it "SURF SKATE."

Larry made the boards by hand in his garage in Santa Monica and soon had the top surfers riding Makaha boards. Guys like Mike Hynson, Phil Edwards, John Peck, Mike Doyle, Dave Rochlen Jr., Mike Purpus and L.J. Richards all rode Makaha.

Larry put together the first skateboard exhibition team in 1963 with ...Bruce Logan, Woody Woodward, Danny Bearer, Scott Archer, Gregg Carroll, John Fries, Joey Saenz, George Trafton jr, and Squeek Blank. The second generation Makaha team of Ty Page, Bruce Logan, Rusty Henderson, Mike Purpus and Torger Johnson was put together to promote the invention that changed skateboarding forever...the kicktail and double kicktail board.
